haha i wouldnt call them slow, id call them reliable as hell. Why do you think all the stunters use the F4i... its a tank
Fastrr
08-12-2006, 09:42 PM
F4i is fast as hell, box stock too. I'd honestly take an F4i over a 600RR why? You can ride further because it's a street bike, not a race bike. Your azz won't bake on the seat, and i like the 'classic' styling of the F4 models. The nice thing about Honda is they make power down lower in the rpm range. I won't bash Yamaha because their current crop of bikes are very reliable and fast. The only problem with the R6 is it doesn't make a great street bike because of it's power range. Most of the time i'm cruising around 4,000 RPM to save gas and keep the wear and tear down to a minimum on the 900RR. My bike doesn't have a very useful power range either for casual riding, but once that baby hits 8,000 RPM .... seeeee YA and toss my weight forward to keep it on the ground!
Soon to come mods include: reinstall the BMC airfilter, DynoJet Stage 1 jet kit , precision carb tune job, Yoshi or Akrapovic bolt on canister, Iridium IX plugs, Factory shift spring, straight clutch cable, Barnett kevlar clutch kit and springs, and Goodridge SS brake lines. I'm also installing "new" forks and tripple trees on the bike. All the crap is in boxes still because it's been too hot outside to work on the bike.
I won't be able to take a modern inline 4, liter bike, but a TLR, TLS, or ZX9R shouldn't be out of the question. Modern 6's won't be able to hang unless it's in the twisties with a good rider. I'm just having fun with the bike and enjoying it while it lasts.. one day i'll be an old fart who can't ride a sportbike.
Next year may require a new bike though as i have 12,000 miles on this one and i want to hang onto it for a long time. I'm thinking of a ZX-6R purchase in 2007, but probably not a 2007 model.

I've got a 97 Honda Shadow VLX 600cc. It's my first bike. I've had it for 3 yrs and about 45,000 miles ago. :D I've never crashed, but set it down quite a bit (always on the driveway at a dead stop) It's only got 4 gears, which didn't suck until I started riding with the group. sigh.

I had a '96 for two years and it was a fun bike!...at the time. I didn't know what I was missing until I stepped out of the cuiser scene and onto my '96 CBR1000F. I think I would have liked my shadow a bit more if it had some more balls at highway speeds and had a windscreen....oh well. If you decide to stay with cruisers, and like your shadow, step up to the 1100...handles almost identical but is much more powerful (only had that one for a year :( )

I was origionally thinking about the Harley Sportster 883, but I keep think about it and I'll probably stick with the Shadow. It really is a good bike. I do want a bigger one. How many gears does the 1100 have? I don't really want a sport bike because of my back. Leaning over all the time is not ideal. I would like to try one out some time. But not for awhile.

1 down 4 up, for some reason I believe the 600 was the same......? It's been awhile so I may just be mistaken.
As for comfort, i too thought that a sportbike would hurt my back too much since I have constant lower back pain already. I just knew that I was tired of parts of my cruisers dragging while just making turns in 25mph residential areas....The thing is, you can get a sport-tourer instead of an SS and be very comfortable. I was looking at several sport bikes this time around and found the VFR800 to be very comfy. I ended up with my current bike because it was more financially feasable and it also offered a more upright seating position.
Also, for many bikes there is always the option to get aftermarket, adjustable clip-ons that will allow you to sit in pretty much any position you desire.

Yeah, I've got lower back pain too. I'm too young damn it! My bike scrapes the ground too. Usually getting on the freeway and going down a mountain too fast. I'll look into the VFR800, but I do like the look of the shadow. It looks kinda like a Harley without the noisy engine and the expense.
My bike is 4 gears. Does that mean 1 down, 3 up? I forget. It's been 3 years since I've had to think about it.

I agree that we are much too young for back pain! Sucks! If you bike only has 4gears it will be 1dwn 3up like you said (1-N-2-3-4). I would much have a metric cruiser than a harley anyday. Another fun and good lookin' cruiser is the Honda magna. It has an egine based on that of the VRF interceptor (V4 10k redline) and is very quick......never owned one but rode one quite a few times....has power similar to that of a sportbike.

It does suck that we are already in pain! Maybe its time to plan our retirements. hahaha. That bike sounds pretty cool. I love my Shadow but it just doesn't have the power. Right now I've got a very flat back tire. That really sucks. It's finally below 100 and I can't ride. sigh. I tried to pump it up a bit and the air was escaping! I think I might need a new tire. Hopefully it can be patched.
