Also known as The Devil's Highway, what is now the 191 (formerly 666.. get it?) is one of the best roads to go riding on in the nation.
From Phoenix, it'll take you probably two, two and a half hours to get to Safford. From there, it's about 30 miles to Clifton. From there it's 92 miles of switchbacks on the 191. You'll probably want to pit stop overnight in Alpine to let your ass (and your nerves) recover after all the twisty roads. Click here (http://www.alpinearizona.com/Businesses/Lodging/lodging.htm) for some information on the small town in the White Mountains.
From Road Trip America (http://www.roadtripamerica.com/drives/Coronado-Trail.htm):
The Federal Highway Administration considers this drive to be the curviest road in the nation. There are nearly 450 switchbacks, (many marked at 10 mph) along the route. There is a 6000-foot change of elevation, starting from the topography of the Upper Sonoran Desert to near-alpine meadows high in the White Mountains. The route provides access to the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest. Cell phone coverage is nonexistent. Make sure you are prepared with whatever tools you might need and an emergency road kit.Click here (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&saddr=&daddr=32.8165963908,-109.671082268+&layer=&ie=UTF8&z=12&ll=32.825077,-109.671021&spn=0.13877,0.346069&t=h&om=1&iwloc=addr) to get to the starting point.
