View Full Version : Where can I go to.....

So I've got my new bike with .4 miles on the odometer. So I still need to break it in. According to Mototuneusa, I should alternate periods of hard acceleration and decelaration. Sounds like I need to rape it, then back off, then rape it again, then back off. Although it sounds like fun, I'm still new to street riding, so this probably wouldn't be a good idea for me to do on busy roads. Any ideas where to go around NW Tucson to do this properly and safely?
BTW: I'm taking the MSF course this weekend. Until then, the bike will remain in my living room. That's why the thing still has less than a mile on it.

what really is more important is a lot of engine breaking. so instead of using your brakes a lot to slow you down you want to use the gears.
if you read your manual, there is a whole section about break-in. toping the bike out is not part of it ;)

there are two proven methods to breaking in an engine... rape, go easy, rape, ect... and then the babying method. All depends on what you want to do. 50% of people agree with one way and 50% of people agree with the other. Its a no one direct answer type of question

The problem I'm encountering is that there are thousands of different recommendations about how to properly break in the engine :umm . Makes my head spin. I got a lot of people on R6-forums swearing by mototuneusa and telling people to ditch the instructions in the manual. But you're saying to read the manual... See where the confusion can mount up?
Blue Devil: So I should just pick whichever method suits me?

My boy roger who owns the track in my sig... has been racing for longer than Ive had pubes... and he says ride it like a bitch for the first 300 or so..
I trust him with everything motorcycle (sport-bike) related.. I mean everything from gear to technique to racing to street-riding...
so if he says ride it hard.. then ride it hard.. maybe it was 600 mi... i dont remember.. anyways.. grats on the bike and the msf course.

i rode it like i stole it the first day I got it. and i have done the same with pretty much every toy with an engine i have ever had.

ya I have a friend who bought the same bike with in days as another friend and one rode it like he stole it and the other babied it and they are both equally skilled riders and every time they drag them the one who rode it hard always beats him by less than a second

U can baby it and just run high and low on the RPMs to get even wear through the piston chambers...that's the real concern. If you baby it and keep it low RPMs then ur chambers will bottle and if you run it hard with high RPMs then you will mushroom the chambers.

i mostly followed the manual with mine
but a thing i keep hearing is "break it in the same way you'll be riding it" - probably the way i'll treat the next bike

I've used this method, as well as several of my friends and a bunch of people I know of... never fails.

Don't listen to anyone about how to break in your bike other than the manufacturer. They have put millions of dollars into research and development of their engines and they know the proper way to break them in.

Ultimately you make your own decisions based on the recommendations of other riders.

Actually, They just dont want to have to honor their warranties if some fukstick goes out and blows the moror or siezes it up. So they say baby it slowly. I went out on the highway and ran it 2nd gear about 80 than bumped it down to 55, and repeat. After a while I clicked it through all the gears and did some light roll-ons.
3000+ miles and still runs perfectly with great accel. (07 GSXR 750)

you can break it in anyway you want...but if you do it the mototune way and it breaks the failure analysis will tell them what happened.and if they feel it was your fault...you'll by the repair.and you'll do it too because what good is a multi-thousand dollar bike without an engine?
me personally?i'd follow the manual.
