View Full Version : Gravel owns me too

Was at the parents house today. Decided to take the 202 home instead of the 60 because it at least isn't a completely straight line.
Went to the 202 W on-ramp at Val Vista, and was going into the left turn just fine. Then something was wrong. It felt like I was loosing control/slipping, and I couldn't figure it out. Next thing I know, I'm on the ground a couple feet away from my bike. Let out a good loud "fuck!", then got up to check the bike. Realized I wasn't hurt, so that was good (besides some minimal rash on my ankle - helmet is slightly scratched.. thank goodness for helmets).
Left side of the bike - fairings have some scratches, but I can live with that. Gives it some character, right? :lol2:
Pulled over and gathered myself. A Harley guy came by and asked if I hit the gravel. What gravel? I looked back, and sure enough - whole ton of gravel in the middle of the intersection. Wonderful. How did I not see it? I'm pissed at myself for not seeing the gravel. There was a good amount of it, too.
I'm gonna go get some peroxide for my scrapes, and then try and figure out the extent of the damage to the bike. It's leaking oil - something's cracked, but I don't know what to call it.
I'll post some pics here for advice in a while..

thanks guys, i know it could have been worse. probably went about as well as a 30 mph lowside could possibly go
at least i know what a wreck feels like, now. in case there was any sort of deep down twisted part that needed to know. now that that's satisfied, i won't have to feel that again
anyway, here's some pics:

found a helpful thread over on katriders - someone had the same problem after tipping over in their driveway:
http://www.katriders.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=17407 (http://www.katriders.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=17407&highlight=stator)
i'll order one online (weld sounds like a temporary solution) and some new oil as well
and i don't have a torque wrench.. after googling that - holy crap, those can be expensive.
anyone have the necessary tools and want to help me sometime in the next week or so???

yea its a 2 person job getting off (THERES A HUGE POWERFUL FUCKIN MAGNET INSIDE) but other than that... its easy as hell...
YOU CAN NOT DO IT WITH OUT A TORQUE WRENCH DONT EVEN ATTEMPT IT>.. if you get one Ill be glad to help though..
and yes weld is a good temp solution.

How is a Torque wrench mandatory. i understand that that is an important part to have all the bolts torqued down right but i can't see how you couldn't get the cover on without one.

It's just one of those parts that has to be put on perfectly...too loose and you will leak, too tight and you'll crush the gasket and you'll leak...

if your experienced enough you know what the different ft-lbs feels like so as long as you know what the recomended ones are you will be fine, but like I said you gotta have the feel. I would use my built in torque wrench only on shit like this though... never internal components and those where the torque is very important. For those jobs I use my torque wrench. So on that line if you wanna come get it, Josh you can use my torque wrench

I am very familiar with that intersection. The gravel was left by the trucks that leave the gravel/concrete yard a few hundred yards south of the freeway. They load up there and then take the freeway. They tear the shit outa that road and leave gravel everywhere. Be careful out there guys.

thanks guys
i've reported the intersection and gravel problem to ADOT and mesa's DOT. mentioned the gravel trucks - maybe there's something they can do about these guys - sounds to me like they need to pack less gravel into these trucks so it's not spilling over. someone (not here) asked if i was going to take legal action - not my sort of thing, as long as someone has been made aware and maybe they'll do something..

Your little toe looks kinda torqued. Maybe its the angle of the shot.

got the part on, buuuut it's still leaking oil. just out of the sides. pretty sure i messed up the gasket - was hoping it would be okay but even after riding around a bit in hopes that heating it up would help - it seems like it's gonna leak
isn't there some sort of gasket repair/liquid application gasket i can use in this sort of case? rather than having to wait on ordering a new oem gasket? i should have just gotten one at the same time, but it slipped my mind
dammit

you could use gasket maker like RTV silicone or something similar just make sure its oil resistant. Some guys only use this stuff and nothing else
schlizzag

cool. i looked up some stuff on checker's website, will be paying them a visit shortly
Eviloliv3
04-14-2007, 08:12 AM
some RTV stuff. ive got some that i can bring you if you go to the car wash today. works great.
its never a good idea to re-use gaskets. they are so cheap its pointless. you are like 75% more likely to leak if you reuse it.

04-14-2007, 08:30 AM
yeah i picked up some of that rtv stuff, i should be good to go in no time - just waiting on sears to open so i can pick something else up

well not all RTV stuff is created equal. the stuff i have is made by Toyota for Toyota vehicles. i use it on just about everything (i used to be a toyota tech, so i have a good amount of this stuff around my garage.
