I've got a fledgling Jetski repair business on the side.
Some of the services I offer are:
remanufactured motors
engine porting, milling, crank rebuilds
carb mods, rebuilds, and performance tuning
Pump/intermediate shaft rebuilds and blueprinting. Dual cooling setups
Stator/ electrical box/ CDI repairs or performance upgrades
Winterization
Freestyle mods (Standups): hood mods, footholds, Hydroturf, shortened handlepoles,
one way valves, Dual to single carb mods, steering mods, Blowsion dealer

I can also build you a standup from the ground up to your specs, from mild to wild, depending on your budget.

I have lots of used parts and like to use a combination of new and used where possible to get your costs down. I always spend a lot of time discussing your options and won't let you sink money into a bottomless pit if your ski isn't worth it.

Specializing in Yamaha and Kawasaki models, two stroke only. I do some work on Polaris and Seadoo also.

Special discounts for DR members

You can BUILD standups from ground up? How much does that usually run? Ball park figure. Got an old Kawi stand up but need to upgrade.

Well it kind of depends on what you are looking for. If you want something for just rec-riding, I could probably build you a squarenose superjet or a Kawi SXI Pro for between $2500-$4500 that would go in the 50-55mph range and be very reliable. The black U-69 Superjet in the pics is my 1990 freestyle squarenose Superjet. Duplicating that could probably run over $10k easy, not including the paint.

If want a race ski, start with a stock SXR (about $3500-$4500 depending on year) and probably another $5k to get it competitive at the amateur level. Right now pro's are almost all running the Hydrospace which is a ridiculous $15k+ new.

If you want to build a nice 96+ Superjet for freestyle, I've been able to find the hulls sometimes for about $2k and then start from there. A better option might be the Rick Roy hull pictured below. Rick is selling those hulls for a great price of $5600 last I checked. The sport model is $6500. It doesn't include his handle pole, which is another grand, but you can use a Superjet pole. As you can see in the sport hull, it's all Superjet donor parts inside. Same thing for the standup model. This is a very light hull that a person on either end can pick up with one hand. Simply find a nice donor ski like this one : http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/boa/1440372394.html (note the 62T motor) and you're in business.
I can get deals on shipping and have lots of contacts in the industry so if I can locate a new stripped hull getting it here is no problem.

Of course, there is no reason to go to such extremes. I have two Squarenose hulls ready to be built: a 1990 that is in excellent shape for $150, and a 1995 that already has a roundnose conversion pole, UMI steering, freestyle footholds and pads, and a pump for $1000. If you want to go for a sport ski, I have a customized Waveblaster hull for $1000 with new paint (no motor).

And then again, depending on what model Kawi you have there is a lot you can do that will make that old ski fun to ride again for not much money.

I think all of those ended up on the racers trash heap. You might have better luck finding an XP Limited.

I think you can still get the new Kawi 800 X2 through some overseas connections but the sport class is pretty much dead right now. I'm hoping that Rick Roy sport ski might bring it back. Watching Dustin Farthing come back and whip the HX crowd on a Waveblaster was one of the best racing ever at the World Finals.

Don't know, don't know, don't know, don't know.

I am really looking for a guide to look for one, I never owned one they just look like fun and everyone has to start somewhere but I would rather not go to the jet ski equivelint of Ride now to get my lesson.

I dont know enough to know what I don't know man. I mean I see units on craigslist from the late 80's and people are asking 4000 for them. For all I know the thing is worth 40 dollars. I know a bike from the late 80's aren't worth more than 1000 running.

If it was me I would try and pick up a 2000 or around there XP from SeaDoo. These big boats they make now a days are no fun to me but I like being able to relax a bit more than the total stand ups.

As far as price, I am sure you could find a decent one for around 2-3k. They held their value pretty well because they don't make them anymore...just the "boats"

I offer a used ski inspection service too, but it's free for DR members. It would just have to work around my crazy schedule.
There actually weren't all that many jetskis in the 80's, just Kawi standup models until 88-89 or so.
If you want reliablility and aren't looking to be the fastest ski on the water, I would look for any of the Yamaha sitdowns from about 1994 up. Anything running the 650 or 701 motor is pretty bulletproof and easy to fix.
Stay away from anything with sun damage because plastic can add up fast, just like on your bike. Also watch out for fiberglass damage. The last ski this guy brought me looked like it had fallen off a trailer and been repaired very badly. He ended up junking the ski and when I cut the hull up the rear of the ski weighed about 80lbs more than it should have.

Just email any Craigslist ads you are interested in and I can give you an opinion: submarine@submarineaz.com
