Ok so I just got laid off from my job and need to sell my bike ASAP to help cover bills. Problem is that the thing will not start and I have come to the conclusion that it is the starter motor. I really need help from a good mechanic to diagnose it and help me fix it so I can get it up on craigslist. I called SVC twice to get an estimate and they say they will check prices and never call back. And seeing as they are closed sunday through tuesday, that will be a lot of downtime before I get it fixed. So if anyone can help me out that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

u can test the starter motor easy, run a power wire to it and touch it. if it spins its good.

well by what i am reading is there is a possible short in the starter motor. The bike will crank and try to turn over but will not fire up. After 5 attempts of starting the battery completely dies. even a fully charged one. By what I have been reading is that can happen when the starter motor has a short and is drawing a rediculous amount of amps and kills the battery. That's why I was hoping to get someone who knows bikes more than me to take a look at it.

so it does nothing when you hit the start button, or it cranks and just wont start?

if it is cranking over that might not be a starter problem. now if it didnt spin at all then yes. it could be a bad coil or many other things, like i said, i would take it to Hi Output, Kenny is awesome at diagnostics especially on electrical shit. or hey, do what TJ did and take it to adrenaline!!!

R1's are known for eating into wires with the fairing stay.. might want to pull off your upper fairing and look for a wear spot in your wireing harness.

if the fuel pump is priming (makes that hightech robot sound on r1) when you first turn the bike on... then it should start, if its not priming you have a ground fault.
