I have an R6 and have a 520 conversion. Chain is worn and needing to get a new conversion kit. My question is what is the difference between a 520 and a 530?
Also I currently have a 16 / 49 gearing. I have been told a 15 / 50 is the optimal gearing for my R6. What are your ideas on what gearing is best? I want speed but am not Moto GP or a stunter.

530 is just a thicker bigger chain. I have a 2006 R6 set up for the track and I only run +1 on the rear and that works for damn near every track. For street I just leave my stuff stock gearing.

Thicker = more weight and a heavier sprocket. But the 99 and 06 are completely incomparable motors so whether or not you need to adjust is up to you. You'll get more low end grunt going -1/+1 but you'll also loose top end and run higher RPM on the freeway; aka loosing a bit of gas mileage also. Personally, my next streetbike is staying completely stock.

What brand would you reccomend?

I would hit up helmet center. They are great guys and can tell you everything you ever wanted to know about chain and sprockets. It also depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for them to last long I would go with steel sprockets and a 530 chain. If you want to increase a few horsepower i would go with a 520 and aluminum sprockets. But I would definently talk to helmet center.

03 R6 here (3rd one). Keep the stock gearing and stay with a 530. They're stronger and will last much longer depending on your riding style. The weight difference between a 530 and 520 is unnoticeable unless you race.

520 Chains increase horsepower? I better get me one of those! Hell and here I thought only the engine made horsepower... LoL :p

ya its called rotating mass.

so is my tire but changing its size isn't gonna add or subtract HP.
Just givin ya hell. Don't worry about it.

changing your tire size will. hence why most of the fastest in the nation run 180/55 rear tire. The guys on dunlops have to run 190s cuz they dont make any other size. I know your just giving me shit but here are the facts

Changing tire or sprocket size doesn't increase or decrease HP, it simply changes the effects of it. HP is derived from engine combustion. Just sayin.

Dee dee dee! lol There it is.

Anyway, just ttrade in your 99 for an 09, THATS how to make it last longer. lol
If not like he said, hit up helmet center and go with a 530 if you what it to last the longest.

use these rear sprockets. they are steel and will last way longer than aluminum http://www.supersproxusa.com/
as far as gearing i would leave the front stock and just go up 3 or 4 in the rear. going down in the front is harder on the chain and it will wear out sooner. just keep the chain and sprockets at 525 pitch.if you arent road racing you wont notice any difference in 525 or 520. 525 best for street riding imo

Up 3 or 4 in the rear??? Thats a substantial increase....I would certainly recommend NOT doing this. I guess it all depends on your riding style though. Do you really need that much more of an acceleration boost? Whats the problem with stock gearing if your doing "normal" riding?

More correctly the reduction in weight and rotating mass in the drivetrain increases drivetrain effeciency by reducing standard loss. So while the HP at the crank will be unchanged there will be an increase in hp at the wheel...which is where it really matters anyway.

As for gearing i just went from the 525 stock chain to a 520 chain with a +2 rear. One thing i found universal was that going down teeth in the front will wear the chain more due to the degree of the angle the chain will need to make. if you were thinking -1/+1 then going just +3 will give similar effects in gearing with less chain wear.

Also why would you look at a 530 chain? Unless I am wrong stock on all 600's is 525 and thousands are running 530's.

It depends on the year of the bike. Most if not all 600s I believe went to a 520 in 2006. My 2004 R6 actually has a 532 chain from the factory.

Oh btw if you change your gearing it's a good idea to get something that corrects the speedometer both for displaying the correct speed and making sure you don't show more miles on the bike than you actually put on.

I just did the speedodrd that i ordered from motomummy ($70 shipped to my door in 3 days which was awesome). It was super easy to install and program maybe 30min total. Also can take out the factory error

not if you leave the front sprocket stock.

yeah it's almost the same as -1/+1 as a -1 in front is about the same as +2 or +3 in the rear
