live and learn..
I bought the service manual for my bike, so I'm going to start learning the ins and outs of maintenance once my service plan is up

Yeah I definately want to learn more about motorcycles in general..Especially changing the oil. That will definately save me $$$.

speaking of metro how much are they charging there for labor now?

09-18-2006, 06:46 PM
i dont know what labor is now but it was bullshit. they charged $85 dollars as a "diagnostic" fee... i told the guy I just spent 12k here and his response was "Did you spend it on this bike" I of course had to say no lol. definately going to take a basic MC class somewhere because I know enough about cars but don't really know shit about bikes.
yeah I was out there today w/ one of my friends who was buying all sorts of useless stuff and I decided to ask the service guy if my bike had been recalled for the TPS issue. He asked me in about 5 different ways whether or not it had ever been serviced there and finally figured out it wasn't going to be in the computer and to go get my VIN. Anyway, I think the guy thought I was an idiot (which I might be, but I would like to think of myself as not being one) and not only that, but an annoying one because I was asking him to look something up for my bike but yet I didn't buy it there or ever have it serviced there.
In general, I try to avoid places like that and either do basic maintnence (oil changes, etc.) myself or take it to one of my friends.

An oil change is cake and will deffinately save you money! Not sure how much it cost to have one done but I'm positive it's cheaper to do yourself, also, you'll know that the job was done right (meaning the filter wasn't put on so tight you'd think it was hit with an impact as well as the drain plug)..

well to do one myself it cost like 25 bucks. some places charge 80 bucks for an oil change, or something like that. which is bullshit, it's so easy to do it.
anyways my bike was getting some loving at hooters!!

 take fairing off, undo the bolt, drain, take off/put on new oil filter, put bolt back in, add oil.

Yeah it was BS Richi and I supposed I should have gone elsewhere but I really didn't want to deal with it. We'll see what they say... Although today I was looking up DIY on repairing the cooling system. I'm sure if I got the tools and sat there, I could figure it out...Right!?1?

IMO $35 for 4 gal of oil is pretty cheap! I get shell rotella T like many others that I know, and it's like 8 bucks a gal at wal-mart. Plus another 6-7 for a Fram filter from autozone/checker/etc... So a change for me is roughly $17.

I use Mobil 1 15w-50 but am looking into trying some Repsol 15w-50.... but i havent had any problems witht eh mobil 1. But i pay the 13 bucks for the Yamaha filters.... How often does eveyone change their oil? i usually do it every 1000 miles, but my bike is my transportation....

The cooling system on these motors is simple. What exactly happened? What temps did the bike reach?

Well it ended up overheating when I was idling in front of hooters and a shit load of antifreeze poured out!

well we will see what metro has to say is wrong. if its something like she needs a new radiator or something they can go fuck themselves. personally, I don't think her fan is turning on which might mean its her thermostat. which is about a 10 dollar part. sooo i unno. well see

Thermostat has nothing to do with the fans. The fans work off a coolant temperature sensor. The thermostat only allows the engine to get to temperature before the coolant circulates through the radiator. Although if it isnt the coolant temp sensor then it could be a bad thermostat that isnt opening. If it isnt opening then it would cause the bike to overheat.

thats basically what I meant just not so technical lol. i thought the thermostat controls the fans as well. doesnt it tell them when to turn on? it works that way in my car... i put a lower thermo in so that the fans kick on and it stays at 180 instead of 210...

Nope, the thermostat is just a simple spring and plate that changes with the temperature of the coolant. The spring compresses with the heat and allows the passage for the coolant to open. There is no electrical involved in it. The fans are controlled by the computer in the car/bike. The computer reads the coolant temp from the coolant sensor and turns the fans on at a designated temperature.
By replacing your stock thermostat which is probably a 195* with what you put in (either a 160 or 180) it makes your engine run cooler. It has nothing to do with the fans. It just allows the thermostat to open earier and stay open in cooler temps. So basically it allows more coolant to flow which allows the engine to run cooler. It doesnt turn the fans on earier.
The only way to turn the fans on earier is to make a manual switch for them, or go into the computer and change the temperature at which the fans turn on.

I was checking out this site in class the other day...It's interesting too and talks about water cooling, etc. and DIY repairs.

Very nice Sly...
See the temp sensor down by the radiator? thats what detects the temp to turn the fans on.
The thermostat at the top allows the coolant to pass through only about the rating temperature of the thermostat is reached or passed.
Same goes for cars...
Motorcycle maintenance is fairly easy as there isnt all the shit like AC that cars have, not to mention everything is a little easier to reach with the fairings off

There was a busted fuse and a water bubble or something.
357Magnum
09-21-2006, 03:59 PM
you should have seen the look on my face when they said it was a fuse. i wanted to hurl. they tried to make me feel better and say that there was an air pocket in the coolant that was causing the fan to come on and off when it shouldnt have and htats what blew the fuse. so yeah, they flushed the radiator and replaced the fuse.

probably an air bubble... the cooling system probably wasnt blead. The fan fuse was probably blown.
Next time you have a problem, post it up and we can help you out instead of paying for it all. Seems to be cheaper then all the bike dealers around here.
