Just out of curiosity, what did you start on and how long was it before you moved to a literbike?

*For people that don't have them but eventually want to get one how long before you think you will get one?

I started on an 00 GSX-R600 and was on that for about 10 months before I sold it and bought my liter bike. Put about 9K miles on the bike (just weekend riding for the most part) before I decided to upgrade.

My first bike I rode was my uncles, it was a beastly Ninja ZX-11... My recomendation, if you are new to bikes, stick with a 600 or 750 until you are fairly certain you are a decent rider. Then move into a 1k or Busa.

even then a 600-750 is way understimated by this thread....the raw power is not necessiarly there on a 600, but it can and does hold its own against any big bore bike out there...

started on a zx7r, rode that for a few months, then decided i wanted something smaller, so i got a cbr f4. had that for a few months and when i got bored, i got an 01 R1. after a couple months, i got bored with that and was about to sell it to a friend to buy another 600, but i got run over by a drunk driver, and that bike was totalled. eventually got a 600rr, and just recently got bored with that and bought an 04 zx10r. the 10 has a ton or power but its really easy to controll if you have even a little experience, although being able to control it and actually being able to ride it are very different things. i will probably get bored with this in a year or so. I want to get an 06 gsxr600/750 or an 06 R6 when they start to become cheap.

If I ever can afford an SS bike it will deffinately be a 600....between my previous cruisers and my current ride, I've had my fill of heavy/hard to manouver bikes.....If I ever am sucessful I'll own a R6Raven and a cbr1000RR Repsol....

well it's a little late for me to re-think my upgrade time as I've had a literbike for a little over a year now. I was mainly just curious to see how long everyone else waited before they moved up. Personally, I think some people blow them out of proportion w/ how unforgiving / uncontrollable they are. Ex. Full power in 1st gear flipping you on your ass. True, (well at least speaking for the 05 R1), the front will come up and it probably will flip you if you let it, but I don't have a problem keeping it down with it ripped open in 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear and such.

even 600's will flip ya up in 1st gear...

*of course me being able to rip it open in 1st, 2nd gear, etc. w/o the front getting to high is also attributed to my uhm, "excess body weight".

I have be riding my R6 for about 2 1/2 yrs now. I love the bike and i think i will ride it until i need to rebuild it and at that time ill pick my self up an RC51.

I have got just shy of 20,000 miles on my bike and its still running like a champ, minus the valve clearance being off alittle bit and im too lazy to tear in to it just yet.

I actually bought my first bike about a month ago and got a 2004 R1. I think that as long as you are smart about riding it, you can get one whenever. You just have to respect the ridiculous amount of power that they have.

Smart is good word...
Respect, is another word that really comes to mind fast
It can be done.. But, R1 parts are expensive
Look what I started on
What amounts to a JATO powered sled that took long arguments to convince there was in fact a corner ahead
..did lay it down, by the way :(
I learned a lot more on smaller and slower bikes
I tend to get lazy when I can just twist the throttle and everything is moving along quickly again
