I am somewhat interested in taking those superbike lessons through AZTrackday. I'm interested not because I want to race competitively, but just to gain some more riding skills and take my bike to the track on an open track day and go at my own pace for the fun of it.

However, I need to know if one should have a separate bike dedicated for trackdays or do riders use their everyday bikes? How likely is it for beginning trackday riders taking lessons to drop their bike? Because I might not get into it if I may expect to end up paying costly damage to my new bike or have to pay to rent out a bike.

Go w your hunch, if you dont feel safe w your streetbike on the track then its prob not a good idea... Most guys have dedicated track bikes. :twocents

I can't afford to have a dedicated track bike or risk paying for repairs to my street bike, so unfortunately, trackdays probably aren't for me. :(

Some insurance companies will cover "riding classes or schools".. Look into that if you really want to do it. Or just do trackdays at your own pace, you will still learn alot. :twocents

I have taken my street bike to the track many times. Like they said above, just get some bodywork or just go to the track and go your own pace. You will learn more about riding in one day at the track than you have learned up to that day. Both track organizations offer instruction while you are at the track for the price included for the trackday

that or spend an extra 200 dollars renting a bike

To be honest with you, I was the same way before I went to the Track for first time, I was hesitant, but if you have never been on Track before, you ride with the beginners and pretty much set your own pace. You will be running street tires more than likely and you should be fine out there, just ride within your limits, that way you don't shed out the $300 plus for racing fairing, or $200 for a rented bike, see if you like first before you go further with it. They even have suits to rent or AZTrackday lets you borrow for free. There's a lot that goes into Track riding not cheap at all, I would take what you have and get out there and see if you like, before shelling out the dough. I can guarantee you will fall in love, if you ride a bike, have interest in riding on the Track, you are destined for Track riding, Track is like Crack! Just my 2cents!

Thanks for the replies.

It looks like I could eventually take some track lessons after all. I think individual clinics on cornering, shifting, braking etc will be helpful for me also

My bike is just about a dedicated track bike. I have all of the OEM stuff in a safe place and can put it all back on if I need to. But that is a solid day's worth of work now. Go with a set of e-racings and frame sliders an you will be fine on the track. Unless you loose the bike at the end of the straight and watch it go flying off in the distance. The biggest key is to know your limits and have fun.
